Key takeaways:
- Jenny Mosley’s Background: A renowned national and international consultant with decades of experience in schools, Jenny has trained globally in places like New Zealand, Australia, India, and Japan, and is known for her Golden Model Approach and Circle Time activities that promote wellbeing and respectful relationships.
- Circle Time Origins: Jenny’s introduction to Circle Time came in 1972 at a school for children with emotional and behavioral difficulties, where a new headteacher implemented staff Circle Time with a psychiatrist, fostering open communication and support, which profoundly influenced her work.
- Importance of Listening Systems: Jenny emphasizes creating safe environments for children to be heard through Circle Time, bubble time (one-on-one focused listening), and think boxes/books for non-verbal expression, helping children feel valued and part of a supportive “family.”
- Mental Health and Self-Care: She stresses that teachers must prioritize their own mental, emotional, and physical health through structured care plans and supportive systems like staff mentoring or rounds to maintain the energy needed to support children effectively.
- Power of Play: Play is critical for mental health, providing a respite from stress and fostering social skills like turn-taking and empathy, with Jenny advocating for “peppery” games integrated into teaching to enhance learning and relationships.
- Puppets and Empathy: Puppets are powerful tools for building empathy, allowing children to explore emotions and issues safely, with Jenny citing examples like Georgia Thorpe’s work using puppets in secondary schools for PSHE to address complex issues.
- Kindness and Community: Jenny’s core philosophy is kindness—to oneself, colleagues, and children—emphasizing the need for schools to foster a supportive ecosystem through practices like staff social committees, celebrating individual “lights,” and maintaining systems to plan and review progress.
