Julie Fisher

Early Years Adviser & Professor of Early Childhood Education

Julie Fisher is a nationally and internationally recognised expert on early childhood education and is currently an independent Early Years Adviser and visiting Professor of Early Childhood Education. 

She held the post of Early Years Adviser in Oxfordshire for 11 years, before which she was lecturer in early childhood education at the University of Reading. She has taught children from 3 to 12 years of age and has been headteacher of two urban, multi-cultural schools. 

In her work, Julie draws on her own research projects with practitioners and children. She is a well-known and respected author whose books include ‘Starting from the Child?’ (recently published in its 5th edition), ‘Moving on to KS1’ (2nd edition 2020), and her best-selling ‘Interacting or Interfering?’ (2016).

Julie holds a doctorate for her research into the changing role of early childhood educators and is a proud recipient of the Nursery World Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to early childhood education.

In this webinar Julie Fisher reflects on some important themes from the latest edition of her book Starting from the Child? Her webinar will address the impact of external influences on the role of early childhood educators and the subsequent impact on how young children are now learning. Julie will challenge some prevailing messages about a sector that, she suggests is being increasingly driven by what adults have to teach rather than children want to learn. In particular she is concerned that play and child-led learning is being squeezed out of early childhood settings at a time when there is evidence that only play will teach children the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.
